Regenerative medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with the process of replacing, repairing or restoring tissue or organ function lost due to damage, disease, deformity or age-related degeneration by using biological materials obtained from the body.

Regenerative medicine uses naturally occurring substances in the body such as cells, tissue, blood components, and growth factors to replace lost tissue, stimulate regeneration, accelerate healing, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve joint function. Some of the common regenerative medicine treatment techniques employed for the treatment of foot and ankle conditions include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), and certain cartilage regeneration procedures. Dr. Richardson also employs innovative modalities such as Shockwave therapy and Tenex to stimulate healing and regeneration.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma or PRP is a high concentration of platelets and plasma processed from a sample of your blood. Platelets play an important role in forming blood clots. They also consist of special proteins, known as growth factors, which help with our body’s healing process. PRP is a relatively new method of treatment for several orthopedic conditions such as muscle, ligament, and tendon injuries; arthritis; and fractures. PRP injections can help alleviate painful symptoms, promote healing, and delay joint replacement surgeries.

BMAC is a concentrate of regenerative stem cells obtained from your own bone marrow. Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue that is found in the center of bones where blood is generated. BMAC is usually processed from bone marrow obtained from various sites such as your hip or pelvis bone with a syringe and has specialized cells that are known to replicate themselves into various types of tissues. This boosts the body’s natural healing abilities and promotes tissue growth.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

The injection of hyaluronic acid, also called viscosupplementation, is a therapeutic treatment used to relieve joint pain. Also known as hyaluronan, hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that provides lubrication to the joints. In certain conditions such as arthritis there is a depletion of hyaluronic acid that results in joint pain. Injected into the joint, hyaluronic acid restores the joint environment and relieves pain.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive method of treating soft tissue injuries. Extracorporeal means outside the body. Shockwave is a short energy wave with high intensity, traveling faster than sound. Targeted shockwaves can help in tissue regeneration and management of pain. It can be used to treat foot and ankle conditions such as plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, Achilles tendon injuries and ligament injuries

Tenex

Tenex, also known as percutaneous tenotomy, is a minimally invasive procedure that uses ultrasonic energy to treat chronic tendon pain by the precise targeting and removal of the scar tissue or damaged tissue without the patient having to undergo conventional surgery.
